Professor Stephen Montgomery-Smith won the 2000 Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research in the physical and mathematical sciences. A native of England, Montgomery-Smith came to MU in 1988 as a visiting assistant professor from the University of Cambridge, England. He joined the regular faculty in 1989, became an associate professor in 1995 and was promoted to professor in 1999. He has been supported continuously by the NSF since 1990.

Montgomery-Smith's research covers a broad spectrum of mathematics. With more than 50 publications, he has made high-level contributions in areas such as Banach Space Theory, probability theory, statistics, harmonic analysis, interpolation theory, function spaces and applied mathematics. Recently, he moved into fluid dynamics and started the new "Fluids" electronic bulletin board for disseminating papers and information in this area of research.

The Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research and creative activity was created to recognize the achievements of faculty members. The award identifies individuals whose accomplishments are impressive, but who are mid-career professionals who are rising in their fields.

The award includes an engraved plaque, a $1,000 cash prize and $2,000 to support professional activities. Previous winners of the award include three members of the department: Steven D. Cutkosky in 1992-93, Mark S. Ashbaugh in 1991-92 and Curator's Professor Nigel J. Kalton in 1983-84.
