Math 8502 (formerly 8618 sec 1)—Topics in Geometry: An introduction to Algebraic Topology from the Geometric point of view

Instructor: Shuguang Wang

Note: This course may be taken concurrently with Prof. Qin's 8618 sec 2.

Description: This is an introduction to Algebraic Topology from the geometric point of view. Prerequisite is minimum, only Math 8250 is required; some additional math maturity will be helpful. The main topics include de Rham cohomology, Mayer-Vietoris sequences, Pincare duality, Thom isomorphism, Cech cohomology, and spectral sequences. The chief purpose is to develop important techniques for the computation of de Rham cohomology. These materials will be useful for further study in Topology, Algebaric Geometry, and other related subjects.

Textbook: The primary textbook is R. Bott and L.W. Tu, Differential Forms in Algebraic Topology, Springer-Verlag, 3rd ed, 1995.
