The University of Missouri belongs to an elite group of 60 American research universities selected for membership in the Association of American Universities. MU is one of only 31 public universities nationwide that has achieved AAU membership as well as the Research Universities 1 ranking of the Carnegie Foundation.

MU was established in 1839, and is the first state university west of the Mississippi River. The 22,000 students at MU come from all 50 states and over 110 countries to live and learn on the beautiful 1,340-acre campus. MU's Graduate School enrolls more than 4,600 graduate students in over 90-graduate degree program

Columbia, Missouri (population 80,000) centrally located between St. Louis and Kansas City, is one of only two cities that have consistently ranked among Money magazine's top 20 places to live in the United States. The Columbia area provides a harmonious balance of university life, refined urban services, restaurants and nightlife, with numerous state parks, lakes, rivers, lush forests, and rolling hills. Add to this the very low cost of living, an award-winning public school system, and you begin to see why Columbia is considered one of the nation's most livable cities.
