Onsager’s vortex approximation
for plane flows
Abstract: Onsager’s Hamiltonian approximation for the flow of ideal
fluids in two dimensions will be presented. The approximation is via a
finite number of vortices supported by N points on the plane.
For almost all initial conditions, with respect to 2N-dimensional
Lebesgue measure, Onsager solutions exist for any finite time, provided
that the total vorticity is not zero.
