The Role of Solitary Waves in the Asymptotics of Nonlinear Dispersive
Wave Equations

Abstract: Solitary waves are rigorously known to play a distinguished
role in the long-time evolution of solutions of the famous Korteweg -
de Vries equation. The present discussion is centered around
exploring in what ways this state of affairs carries over to much
more general evolution equations. After a review of older results,
we aim to discuss some of the more recent theory. It will appear
that after a lot of effort by a considerable cadre of scientists, we
are still far from a serious understanding of why solitary waves are
so ubiquitous in situations featuring nonlinearity and dispersion.
