The Mathematics Department at the University of Missouri

The University

The University of Missouri belongs to an elite group of 56 American research universities selected for membership in the Association of American Universities. MU is one of only 28 nationwide that has achieved AAU membership as well as Research Universities rank 1 by the Carnegie Foundation. MU was established in 1839, and is the oldest state university west of the Mississippi River. The 22,000 students at MU come from all 50 states and over 110 countries to live and learn on the beautiful 1,340 acre campus. MU's Graduate School enrolls more than 4,600 graduate students in over 90 graduate degree programs.

Location

Columbia, Missouri (population 78,000), centrally located between St. Louis and Kansas City, is one of only two cities that have consistently ranked among Money Magazine's top 20 places to live in the U.S. The Columbia area provides a harmonious balance of refined urban services, restaurants, and nightlife with numerous state parks, lakes, rivers, lush forests, and rolling hills. Add to this the very low cost of living, an award-winning public school system and you begin to see why Columbia is considered one of the nation's most livable cities.

Enhancement

On October 22, 1992, the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri targeted the department of mathematics for enhancement. In addition to increasing graduate student funding, 11 new faculty positions were created, with the goal of increasing faculty size to 42. Click here for more details.

The department is exciting and dynamic, with numerous research seminars and colloquia. As we grow, so will our reputation in the worldwide mathematics community. This will have a profound effect on the quality of graduate life as well as on our ability to place our graduates in high quality jobs.

Research Facilities

The Mathematical Sciences Building houses a library with more than 34,000 volumes and 430 journal titles. MU students have access to an extensive array of computing resources distributed among half a dozen labs. Among the publicly accessible computers on campus are: 800 IBM PC and Macintosh microcomputers, over 200 Silicon Graphics Unix workstations, an IBM RS/6000 Unix mainframe, and an IBM 3090 mainframe running VM/CMS and VMS/TSO. All these computers have access to a wide variety of high quality laser printers and are networked to the campus backbone, which provides a high-speed link to the Internet. In addition, MU has a site license for Mathematica which is used for instruction in many courses.
