Welcome to my homepage. Here is a brief introduction of myself.
I was born in the year of snake (1965 exact 6 zodiac cycles
after Chairman Mao) in a poor rural village of China near the
border to Russia. When I was 3, I started to remember things.
I remembered the only toy I had was a wired radio. Playing with
the charged wire was a lot fun. Schools were shacks with tables
and benches. When I was 17, I got admitted into Peking University
which came as a surprise to a county of hugh population. Four
years later, I was recommended into its graduate school without
further testing. I chose a famed chinese scientist Pei-Yuan Chou
as my advisor working on Turbulence. Once he was an assistant
of Albert Einstein. Since he was almost 90 years old, his
assistant supervised me. Soon I and the assistant broke up.
Another stronger assistant ended up supervising me. Three years
later, Tian An Men Square started, I got admitted into Princeton
University graduate school. The first successful negotiation
I had was with John Mather, graduate director of mathematics
at Princeton at the time. After showing him I also had admissions
to Cornell and others, he immediately offered me a Merit Prize.
I chose to work with David McLaughlin on Chaos. We had several
papers together. Four years later (1993), I got my Ph.D. and
married to Sherry. I had exhilarating 11 years at both PUs.
I ended up a Hedrick assistant professor at UCLA. I also spent
half year in 1994 at MSRI participating a workshop. During the
UCLA time, I mainly worked with Stephen Wiggins at Caltech. We
had several papers and a book together. In 1995, we had our son
Brandon. This was the time that I realized toys can be fancier
than a wired radio. In 1996, I moved to MIT taking an instructor
position. In 1998, I spent a year at IAS jointly with Harvard
and MSRI in honor of an AMS centennial fellowship. At IAS, I
was also honored with a Guggenheim fellowship. These 5 years
were my innocent traveling time. In 1999, I took a permanent
position at University of Missouri-Columbia and lived happily
ever after. I love my little town - Columbia!
