Goals and principles:
The purpose of this class is to expose undergraduate students
interesting in mathematics to advanced problem solving techniques. The
original motivation for launching this course was to prepare students
for the national Putnam examination, held every year on the first
Saturday of December, and for the Missouri State competition, held in
the spring. Last year's team finished 54th out of more than 400
participating teams.While
Putnam exam preparation is still one of the goals for the class, the
course has evolved beyond those boundaries. The students will learn a
variety of techniques designed to bridge their knowledge of various
areas of mathematics and to give them a taste of what research
mathematics is like.
Recruitment:
If you know anyone who may be interested in taking
this class, please encourage them to do so!
Field
trips:
We are planning one or two field trips to meet with the problem solving
students at the Washington University in St. Louis, and,
possibly, with the students of the University of Arkansas.
Grading:
Perfect attendance and reasonable effort results in an "A" grade for
the class. This is an adult class, and grade pressure is meant to be
replaced by enthusiasm and enlightened self-interest.
