Abstract: If I wanted to describe the dynamics of a gas, one approach would be to analyze every molecule individually and write down its equations of motion. As we will see, this is foolish! We would have to solve ~10^23 equations of motion, and why would we care what each molecule is doing? This talk will aim to explain why statistical methods are useful to go from microscopic to macroscopic dynamics, the history behind the subject, ties to thermodynamics, and some cool examples.
