Derived categories are an essential tool in modern algebra as they provide the ideal setting for such things as derived functors as well as studying the relations between similar algebraic objects. Unfortunately, they have a reputation of being rather abstruse. In this week's talk, I'll try to present the "big picture" of the theory by motivating the definitions and by explaining how they simplify many well-known constructions from homological algebra. In next week's talk I'll then go over the construction of the derived category as well as some applications of them.
