Abstract: Originally introduced as a simple ‘toy model’ describing magnetic solids, the Ising model has proven to be surprisingly rich. In this talk I plan to focus on the motivation behind the definition and discuss the original solution of the 1-D model, due to Ising.  If time permits, I will mention the very interesting behavior of the system in higher dimensions.
