Stephen Quinn (Univ of Missouri)

In today's talk, we will introduce several concepts in voting theory. First we will cover voting power indices to discuss the advantage of certain coalitions of voters. Second, we will survey the problem of establishing fair voting procedures. The talk will include numerous examples and disconcerting paradoxes to illustrate the problems that arise when trying to design a fair system.  Time permitting, we will discuss issues involved in fair allocation of representatives to districts. No prerequisites required.
