An invitation to topological data analysis

Abstract: Topological data analysis concerns primarily with extraction of information from possibly high-dimensional sparse and noisy samples. The shape of data can be analysed using techniques of computational topology, a rapidly growing field at the interface of algebraic topology and numerical computations. This talk will focus on fundamental concepts and ideas including persistent homology and its bar code illustrations for point cloud data. As an application of topological persistence, the use of discrete Morse theory in the study of large-scale structures in cosmology will be discussed.
