Nigel Kalton was an outstanding mathematician, whose ideas transformed functional analysis and gave work to researchers for many years to come. Nigel's mind is bound to remain a mystery, and I am unable to understand how he managed to create such mathematics. But I can provide a collaborator's testimony, and some insight on what it meant to work with him. Moreover Nigel was more than a very impressive researcher. He was a man of taste, a knowledgeable historian, a family man, and good company. I will share some memories about a friend I miss so much.
