Math Course Prerequisite Information

Math 0110: Intermediate Algebra

No prerequisite

Math 1100: College Algebra and Math 1050: Quantitative Reasoning

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1050 or Math 1100, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 0110 (or transferable equivalent)
  • Math Placement Intermediate Algebra Test score of 70% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Note: Students who are exempt from College Algebra must still earn the minimum Math Placement Intermediate Algebra Test score in order to take Math 1100.

Students who do not satisfy the prerequisite requirements will be dropped from their course.

For students who do not currently satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1050 or Math 1100:

  • If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course (Math 0110), then you must earn a C- or higher grade in order to remain in Math 1050 or Math 1100 for the upcoming semester.
  • If you plan to take the prerequisite course at another college or university, you will need to submit appropriate documentation of your transfer course to the Office of Admissions. In addition, students should bring a copy of their transcript with them to campus in case verification by the Math department is required. (If you have completed the prerequisite course and need to request a permission number to enroll in this course, MATH Department Permission Number Request.)

Math 1140: Trigonometry

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1140, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1100 (or transferable equivalent)
    • Math Placement Test College Algebra score of 70% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Note: Students who are exempt from College Algebra must still earn the minimum Math Placement Test score in order to take Math 1140.

Math 1160: Pre-Calculus

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1160, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1100 (or transferable equivalent)
  • B+ or higher grade in Math 0110 (at MU - NOT transfer credit)
  • Math Placement Test College Algebra score of 60% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Note: Students who are exempt from College Algebra must still earn the minimum Math Placement Test score in order to take Math 1160.

Students who do not satisfy the prerequisite requirements will be dropped from their course.

For students who do not currently satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1160:

  • If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course (Math 1100 or 0110), then you must earn the minimum grade indicated above in order to remain in Math 1160 for the upcoming semester.
  • If you plan to take the prerequisite course at another college or university, you will need to submit appropriate documentation of your transfer course to the Office of Admissions. Math 1300: Finite Mathematics

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1300, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1100 or Math 1160 (or transferable equivalent)
  • Credit by exam for Math 1100 (via Proctored ALEKS Exam)
  • College Algebra Exemption AND Math Placement Test College Algebra score of 70% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Note: Students who are exempt from College Algebra must still earn the minimum Math Placement Test score in order to take Math 1300.

For students who do not currently satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1300:

  • If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course (Math 1100 or 1160), then you must earn a C- or higher grade in order to remain in Math 1300 for the upcoming semester.
  • If you are currently enrolled in Math 1320, then you will receive back-credit for Math 1100 upon completion of the course with a C- or higher. The credit received for Math 1100 will satisfy the prerequisite for Math 1300.
  • If you plan to take the prerequisite course at another college or university, you will need to submit appropriate documentation of your transfer course to the Office of Admissions. In addition, students should bring a copy of their transcript with them to campus in case verification by the Math department is required. Math 1360: Geometric Concepts

C- or higher grade in Math 1100, OR Math Placement Test College Algebra score of 70% or higher  (see valid placement test dates below)

Math 1400: Calculus for Life & Soc. Sci. I

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1400, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1100 or Math 1160 (or transferable equivalent)
  • Math Placement Test College Algebra score of 70% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Math 1500**: Calculus I

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1500, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1160 (or transferable equivalent)
  • C- or higher grade in BOTH Math 1100 and Math 1140 (or transferable equivalent)
  • Math Placement Test Pre-Calculus score of 70% or higher
  • Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:
    • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
    • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Note: Students who are exempt from College Algebra must still earn the minimum Math Placement Test score in order to take Math 1500.

Math 1700: Calculus II

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1700, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1500 (or transferable equivalent)
  • AP Calculus AB Exam score (or AB Subscore from BC Exam) of 3 or higher
  • AP Calculus BC Exam score of 3 or higher

Students who do not satisfy the prerequisite requirements will be dropped from their course.

For students who do not currently satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 1700:

  • If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course (Math 1500), then you must earn a C- or higher grade in order to remain in Math 1700 for the upcoming semester.
  • If you plan to take the prerequisite course at another college or university, you will need to submit appropriate documentation of your transfer course to the Office of Admissions. In addition, students should bring a copy of their transcript with them to campus in case verification by the Math department is required. Math 2100: Calculus for Life & Soc. Sci. II

C- or higher grade in Math 1320 or 1400 or 1500

Math 2300: Calculus III

In order to satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 2300, students must satisfy ONE of the following criteria:

  • C- or higher grade in Math 1700 (or transferable equivalent)
  • AP Calculus BC Exam score of 3 or higher

Students who do not satisfy the prerequisite requirements will be dropped from their course.

For students who do not currently satisfy the prerequisite requirements for Math 2300:

  • If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course (Math 1700), then you must earn a C- or higher grade in order to remain in Math 2300 for the upcoming semester.
  • If you plan to take the prerequisite course at another college or university, you will need to submit appropriate documentation of your transfer course to the Office of Admissions. In addition, students should bring a copy of their transcript with them to campus in case verification by the Math department is required. Math 2320: Discrete Math Structures

C- or higher grade in Math 1700 or 4060 or 4070

Math 4100: Differential Equations

C- or higher grade in Math 2300

Math 4140: Matrix Theory

C- or higher grade in Math 2300 or 2320

Valid dates for your Math Placement Test scores:

  • for Fall 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 9/15/18 or later
  • for Spring 2019 courses: Math Placement Test scores dated 2/15/18 or later

Students who take Calculus at MU will receive back-credit for the appropriate prerequisite course upon completion of the Calculus course with a C- or higher.
* Students who complete Math 1320 or 1400 with a C- or above will receive back-credit for Math 1100.
**Students who complete Math 1500 with a C- or above will receive back-credit for Math 1160 (or an equivalent combination of Math 1100 and Math 1140).
