Maria Vasko is currently working as Mathematics Instructor at MU. She has extensive teaching experience in a range of environments. Instructor Vasko has been teaching College Algebra, Finite Math, and Calculus at MU, tutoring students in a variety of courses from Intermediate Algebra through Calculus III at Lincoln University, and teaching Algebra and Geometry to high school students at Jefferson City high school.
Since Maria first began to tutor classmates in high school, teaching has been an important part of her life. She believes in the importance in a method of teaching that emphasizes the high-level connections, as opposed to technical proficiency in performing computations which are easily forgotten, and becoming increasingly obsolete by modern mathematical and scientific software tools. She believes teachers should act as guides, pointing students in the direction to find answers and solve problems by providing them with the essential information they need to do so.
Maria also believes that the best in a person can come out in a non-stressful situation. Students tend to learn more effectively from an approachable teacher who sets up a comfortable atmosphere conducive to learning. One of the crucial elements of engagement is that students must have the freedom and means to tell a teacher when they are lost or confused. She strongly encourages students to interact with her on an individual level, during office hours or via email. A teacher must respect the goals, needs, and individuality of each student and help each student do his or her best to achieve these goals.
Instructor Vasko was on the Dean’s List the entire time at Lincoln University, was nominated for Goldwater Scholarship, and received an award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Mathematics. Maria was also named Tutor of The Year for 2009-2010 school years at LU.
